Iraqi Parliament Speaker Due to Visit Iran Soon
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi will travel to Iran on Saturday, an adviser to the Iranian parliament speaker said.
Hossein Sheikholeslam told Tasnim on Monday that the Iraqi parliament speaker, along with a delegation of Iraqi lawmakers, is scheduled to arrive in Iran on September 14.
According to Sheikholeslam, the Iraqi parliamentary delegation will discuss “bilateral interactions, regional and international developments, and the issue of Syria” with the Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani.
Nujaifi’s upcoming visit to Tehran will take place nearly a week after Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif made his first foreign trip to Iraq on September 8.
“I made my first (foreign) visit to Baghdad because Iran attaches significance to relations with its neighbors, particularly Iraq,” Zarif told reporters as he arrived in Iraq on Sunday.
During his two-day visit to the Arab country, the Iranian minister met with a number of Iraqi senior officials and top religious leaders, with whom he discussed the latest developments in the region, particularly the ongoing crisis in Syria.
Iran and Iraq, the two neighboring countries in the Middle East, share common concerns, especially over the Syrian turmoil.
Iraq , which borders Syria and is host to a large number of Syrian refugees, opposes military intervention in Syria and has called for a political solution to end the prolonged crisis in that country.
