Iran Dispatches Relief, Rescue Teams to Southeast Region
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Shortly after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck a remote area in southwest Pakistan, the Iranian Red Crescent Society dispatched some relief and rescue teams to regions in southeast of the country abutting the affected areas in Pakistan.
Head of the Relief and Rescue Organization of the Iranian Red Crescent Society Mahmoud Mozaffar told Tasnim News Agency that the Iranian relief and rescue teams have been dispatched to Saravan region in Iran’s Sistan and Balouchestan province, but so far there have been no reports of casualties on the Iranian side of the border.
An earthquake measuring 7.8 in the open-ended Richter scale hit Pakistan’s southwestern regions on Tuesday with strong tremors being felt in many parts of the region.
The United States Geological Survey said that a 7.8 magnitude quake struck 145 miles southeast of Dalbandin, in Pakistan's province of Balochistan.
The quake was felt in the Indian capital of New Delhi where buildings shook.
Balochistan, Pakistan's largest but least populated province, is prone to earthquakes, with at least 35 people killed in another 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit southeastern Iran in April.
