Iran, Argentina to Discuss AMIA Case in New York
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian and Argentinean foreign ministers are scheduled to meet and exchange viewpoints on AMIA case on the sidelines of the 68th UN General Assembly, media reported said Saturday.
According to Minuto Uno a Spanish language website, Mohammad Javad Zarif and Hector Timmerman are scheduled to meet today (Saturday) in New York to talk on the long, drawn-out AMIA case.
Argentina’s Senate earlier this year voted to approve an agreement with Iran on the establishment of a fact-finding committee to investigate the bombing of the AMIA Jewish center in 1994 which left 85 people dead.
On January 27, the former Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi and his Argentinean counterpart Hector Timerman signed a memorandum of understanding in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to create a “truth commission” that will investigate the AMIA bombing, which will be staffed by jurists chosen jointly by the two governments. AMIA stands for the Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina or the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association.
Israel and some Jewish lobbyists accuse Iran of the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires. The Islamic Republic has categorically denied any involvement in the terrorist bombing. No suspects have been convicted for the bombing.
Timmerman has said he will defend the MoU agreed between the two sides and welcomed Tehran's readiness to cooperate on the issue.
