Iran’s Head Coach Quiroz Welcomes Iran-US Friendly

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Portuguese Head Coach of the Iranian national soccer team Carlos Quiroz on Saturday welcomed the idea of holding an Iran-United States friendly match before the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

The President of the US soccer federation has called Iran's head coach to inform him that he was interested in having a preparatory match between his team and the Iranian side.

Quiroz contacted the Iranian Football federation following the phone call and told them that he welcomed the idea and also suggested that the Iranian national soccer team would have a preparation camp in America before the beginning of the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

If the conditions for holding the friendly were met, the Iranian team would leave Tehran for USA during the last week of April, 2014.

Head of Iran's Football Federation Ali Kaffashian, too, has confirmed in contacts with the sports media that Iran and the US would hold a friendly soccer match.

Kafashian said that the sides had to figure out some details, after which a friendly match could be held.

He added that in total 4 countries would participate in a series of friendly matches, among which there are Iran, the US, a European country and a country from South America.

The Iranian and US soccer teams have played twice before. Iran defeated the US 2-1 in a game at the 1998 World Cup in France. And the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in a match in Pasadena, California two years later.

Iran and the United States have both already qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
