Iran Congratulates Tunisia on Holding Successful Election

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran congratulated the Tunisian people and government on the successful holding of the recent presidential election in the North African country.

Following the declaration of official results by Tunisian electoral officials, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham hailed the African country's success in the “establishment of democratic process” as an important outcome of the Tunisian revolution.

The Tunisian Independent Election Commission announced the official results of second-round presidential votes on Monday.

Beji Caid Essebsi won Tunisia's first free presidential election, beating rival and incumbent Moncef Marzouki with 55.68 percent of the vote, official results show.

The landmark second-round vote sets Tunisia apart from the turmoil of other Arab countries that went through uprisings that started in 2011 and were known by some as "the Arab Spring".

The election was held amid tight security and the closure of main border posts with strife-torn neighboring country Libya and is considered Tunisia's first free presidential election since independence from France in 1956.
