Parliament Speaker: Iranian Nation Not to Give in to US Pressures
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani deplored US policy of pressure on the Islamic Republic over its nuclear energy program, and stressed that Tehran will not give in to Washington’s excessive demands.
Speaking at an open session of parliament on Sunday, Larijani said the US is seeking to pressure Iran into accepting its demands over the country's nuclear issue.
Pointing to the ongoing debates in the US political circles over continued pressure on Iran, Larijani said Obama cannot make a wise and logical decision due to the the US internal weaknesses and troubles.
He underlined Iranian nation’s resistance to the US policy of pressure, and stated, “Mr. Obama should know well that the Iranian nation will not give in (to pressures).”
“With such a wrong policy during (nuclear) negotiations, he (Obama) would be the side responsible for the failure of negotiations since he thinks that he can make Iran incur the cost of his weakness in resolving the internal problems (in the US),” Larijani added.
US officials believe that only a showing of substantial economic pressure can bring the Iranians to their senses and reestablish US resolve to end Iran’s nuclear program.
US Senate Republicans are seeking to put an Iran sanctions bill up for an immediate vote.
While Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) are in talks to strike a permanent nuclear deal, Tehran has repeatedly noted that imposing new sanctions runs counter to the Joint Plan of Action, an interim accord signed in Geneva in November 2013.
Based on the Geneva interim deal, the world powers agreed to suspend some non-essential sanctions and to impose no new nuclear-related bans in return for Tehran's decision to freeze parts of its nuclear activities.
