Commander: Iran Capable of Producing Laser Cannons
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior commander of Iran’s air defense forces said the country is capable of producing laser cannons, both in offensive and defensive spheres.
Lieutenant Commander of Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base for Executive Affairs General Shahrokh Shahram, in an interview with Tasnim News Agency on Friday, asserted that the Islamic Republic is capable of producing laser cannons to be mounted on the country’s warships.
“Definitely we have such an ability, both in defensive and offensive spheres,” the commander explained, adding that laser cannons are not among very modern weaponry.
He went on to say that Iranian air defense forces also enjoy the technology to counter the enemies’ laser systems and can divert the laser guns easily.
In recent years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and has attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.
In December 2011, the Iranian military brought down a US RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft. The US RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft was grounded with minimal damage by the Iranian Army's electronic warfare unit. The drone was one of America's most advanced spy aircraft.
In a separate development in November 2012, Iran shooed away a US drone that had entered the country’s airspace above the territorial waters of the Islamic Republic in the Persian Gulf.
