Ayatollah Yazdi Elected Chairman of Iran’s Assembly of Experts
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Members of Iran’s Assembly of Experts on Tuesday elected Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi as the assembly’s new chairman.
In the first round of voting on Tuesday morning, Ayatollah Yazdi and Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani garnered a majority of votes, while the third candidate, Aytaollah Mohammad Mo’men, failed to win enough votes.
A run-off voting was held afterwards, in which Ayatollah Yazdi could secure 47 votes and take up the post.
Ayatollah Yazdi succeeds Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani, who passed away in October 2014.
The Assembly of Experts is a high-ranking body of experts which elects and oversees the activities of the leader of the Islamic Revolution.
Ayatollah Yazdi is a high-ranking cleric among religious academics who already served as the assembly’s deputy chairman.
