Construction of Pasabandar Navy Base in Progress: Iran Navy Commander

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Development of Iran's newest naval base at the coastal area of Pasabandar in the country's southeasternmost corner is vigorously in progress, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Sayyari said a lot of construction work is underway in the coastal area.

He said construction of the naval base's breakwater is now over, adding that installation of equipment in the base will be completed gradually.

He also unveiled plans for furnishing the new naval base with a host of systems and facilities.

The commander further stressed that the Navy is in possession of intelligence, reconnaissance, control and monitoring systems for  monitoring every move in northern parts of the Indian Ocean and elsewhere the region.

Pasabandar, also known as the coasts of Makran, is located in Iran's southeastern region, beside the Oman Sea.

The strategic area has attracted the attention of many Iranian decision-makers and military officials, particularly after Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei stressed the need for development of the region.

Back in November 2014, in a meeting with high-ranking navy commanders, Ayatollah Khamenei said, "The issue of development of the coasts of Makran is also among those basic tasks, and the plans for that region should be carried out more rapidly."
