Airlift of Iran’s Humanitarian Aid for Yemen Lands in Djibouti
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Red Crescent Society (IRCS) dispatched 20 tons of canned food aboard a cargo plane to Djibouti on Friday to be delivered to people of Yemen, who are in dire need of assistance in the wake of more than two months of military attacks by a Saudi-led coalition.
According to Shahaboddin Mohammadi Araqi, the IRCS deputy director for international and humanitarian affairs, the Iranian plane, loaded with 20 tons of canned food in Iran’s southern port city of Banda Abbas, landed in Djibouti on Friday morning after receiving permission from the African country.
An Iranian cargo ship had already dispatched 2,500 tons of food and medical supplies for Yemenis via Djibouti, where the United Nations oversees humanitarian deliveries.
Last week, Araqi had also unveiled plans for another seaborne consignment of Iranian humanitarian supplies for Yemen, including 12,000 tons of foodstuff.
On March 26, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies began to launch deadly air strikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.
According to Yemen's Freedom House Foundation, the Saudi airstrikes have claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Yemeni people so far while more than 7,000 others have been wounded, most of them civilians.
Meantime, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) revealed that 2,453 civilians have been injured, among whom 130 were women and 234 children.
