Iran Backs UN Push for Peace in Yemen
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy foreign minister voiced Tehran’s support for the United Nation’s efforts to bring about peace in Yemen through a political process and dialogue.
In a Wednesday telephone conversation with the UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Tehran’s principled policy towards Yemen remains to be the call for a halt on foreign military attacks on the Arab country and settlement of the conflicts through dialogue.
He also expressed Iran’s support for the UN envoy’s peace endeavors and any political solution to the Yemen crisis that entails Yemeni-Yemeni talks.
For his part, Cheikh Ahmed said political negotiations are underway in a positive atmosphere to settle the Yemeni conflicts despite difficulties.
He also hailed the idea of ceasefire in different parts of Yemen and a simultaneous onset of political dialogue among the Yemeni groups according to the UN resolutions, without elaborating on a UN plan for the war-hit country.
Yemen has been under airstrikes by a Saudi-led coalition for five months.
On March 26, Riyadh and some of its Arab allies launched a military campaign against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Saudis.
More than 4000 people, many of them children and women, have been killed in the Saudi-led aggression against the Arab country so far.
