Lawmaker: Iran Opposed to Nuclear Weapons on Principle

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Nuclear weapons have no room in Iran’s defense strategy and Tehran’s nuclear policy is straightforward and transparent, a senior Iranian legislator stressed on Sunday.

“The big lie that the Islamic Republic of Iran is moving towards making nuclear weapon has been repeated so many times that it has become part of the political conviction of the US Congress members. But Iran’s (nuclear) policy is transparent and honest, and we are seriously opposed to nuclear weapons,” Chairman of Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Sunday.

“ The red line is nuclear weapon…Below this line, we should continue our peaceful nuclear activities based on our needs," he explained.

In a separate development on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Araqchi once again described the country’s nuclear activities as transparent and peaceful, and noted that all the country's nuclear activities and facilities are under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The spokesperson further added that Iran's policy is to use peaceful nuclear energy for scientific and economic development within the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Also, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said recently that his country has never been after a nuclear weapon as it would threaten Iran's security, but added that Iran would not give up its right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

"We consider the possession of nuclear arms doesn't conform with the interests of the country and threatens the security of Iran," Zarif said.
