Iranian Official Hopes for Broader Ties with Kyrgyzstan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran’s First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri said he hopes that bilateral relations between Iran and Kyrgyzstan would further grow in future.

In a Saturday message to Kyrgyz Prime Minister Jantoro Satybaldiev, Jahangiri expressed the hope that expansion of relations between Tehran and Bishkek, in bilateral and multilateral levels, would continue its developing course, so that the two nations "can enjoy the positive and useful” results of such interactions.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was in Kyrgyz capital city of Bishkek on Thursday and Friday to attend the 13th annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), of which Kyrgyzstan is a member.

The president’s visit to Bishkek took place at an official invitation by his Kyrgyz counterpart Almazbek Atambayev.

Kyrgyzstan proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union on August 31, 1991. It is also a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Eurasian Economic Community, the Non-aligned movement, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).

ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey for the purpose of promoting economic, technical and cultural cooperation among the member states. In 1992, the organization was expanded to include seven new members, namely Afghanistan, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Republic of Uzbekistan.
