Iran's Stands in Defense of Syrian Nation Effective: MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran has stood firm in defending the Syrian government and nation and its efforts to avert a military action against Syria proved to be useful and effective, an Iranian legislator said.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s measures have been always effective and beneficial, and will be effective in future too,” member of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Safar Naeemi told Tasnim on Sunday, referring to Tehran’s support for Damascus in the face of  foreign threats against the Arab country.

He also warned against any military action against Syria, and said, “Such military operation will not only work to the detriment of the US, but also results in the destruction of Israel.”

On the US decision to put on hold military strike on Syria, Naeemi argued that Washington was not in a position to attack Syira as it faces a sceptical public "opposed to military intervention against other countries."

The US had been pressing for military action on Syria since a suspected chemical weapons attack in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21, which it blamed on the forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The government of Syria has denied involvement and said the rebels were responsible.

US President Barack Obama, however, stopped short of ordering a strike recently and said he would seek the endorsement of Congress for any assault on Syria. But he had a difficult task convincing a deeply divided Congress and a public strongly against use of military force.

But the Monday offer of Russia, that Syria put its arsenal of chemical weapons under international control, helped Obama avoid a defeat at Congress, as most polls suggested his resolution for the use of force would have been voted down by US senators and representatives.

The White House has called off military action in a deal with Russia to remove Syria's chemical weapons.
