Iran Calls Political Solution Sole Option to End Syrian Crisis

Iran insists on political solution as the only way out of the status quo in Syria, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs said on Wednesday in a meeting in Tehran with Powell Robillard, the first assistant secretary for South and West Asia and Middle East Division at Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

He said that Tehran remains opposed to any foreign intervention in the internal affairs of other countries, including Syria.

Amir Abdollahian also voiced Iran’s support for negotiations and national dialog as the key to resolve the unrest in North African and Middle Eastern countries.

That is while the Iranian president Hassan Rouhani in a telephone talk with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday once again stressed Tehran’s support for the Syrian nation and peaceful solution to the crisis in the Arab country.
 
In his phone conversation, the Iranian president condemned the terrorist activities in Syria and also voiced Tehran's opposition to military intervention in the crisis-hit country.

The terrorist activities carried out by foreign-sponsored militants and Takfiri extremists in Syria are threats not only for the Syrian nation, but also for the whole region and the international peace and stability, Rouhani underlined.

“There is no military solution to the crisis in Syria, and restoration of stability and peace in the friend country of Syria is one of the objectives pursued by the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Rouhani said.

Since 2011, Syria has been plagued by deadly militancy backed by the Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

Over 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the violence, according to figures released by the United Nations.
