Opposition Leader Calls on Manama to Stop Suppressing People

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of a top Bahraini opposition party called on Al Khalifa regime to stop suppressing the nation and comply with its promises to observe the democratic norms.

Bahraini people are asking the government to take practical steps to resolve problems, said Sheikh Ali Salman, the secretary general of Bahrain's main opposition group, al-Wefaq National Islamic Society.

"It is not possible to trust Al Khalifa regime amid constant violation of the human rights and the organized crimes against people," Sheikh Salman was quoted by Mer'at al-Bahrain website as saying.

“Respecting the human rights and the people’s votes, stopping political arrests and attacks on the people’s homes, and ending discrimination and the act of granting political citizenship to foreigners are among natural rights that need no negotiations,” he said.

Sheikh Ali Salman further emphasized that both the Bahraini regime and the Zionist regime of Israel are pursuing the policy of suppression, and called on the government to meet people's demands and remove their problems.

Since mid-February 2011, thousands of pro-democracy protesters have staged numerous demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.
