Leader Appreciates Iran National Wrestling Team for World Cup Championship


TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei in a message on Monday commended the country’s national freestyle wrestling team for winning the world championship title.

Iran’s national freestyle wrestling team was crowned world cup championship in the United States on Sunday evening.

Following the Iranian wrestlers’ brilliant performance and major victories against strong teams such as the US and Russia, the Supreme Leader in a Monday message acknowledged the national wrestling team’s considerable efforts in the competitions.

“I thank the wrestlers, coaches and the other members of the national freestyle wrestling team of our dear country Iran, who delighted the nation with their efforts,” Ayatollah Khamenei stated in the message.

Iran took part in the competitions with 16 wrestlers in eight weight category.

Iran free-style wrestling team won the World Cup for the third straight year.

The Iranian team beat Russia 6-2 in the World Cup finals at the Forum in Los Angeles.

Iran, backed by a noisy crowd of fans, also won the team title at the 2013 World Championships in freestyle wrestling.

In third-place match, host US defeated Ukraine 7-1.

Iran had already defeated Armenia (8-0), Turkey (7-1), US (5-3), and India (8-0) in Pool A.
