Spokeswoman Censures EP over Anti-Iran Motion

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian foreign ministry spokeswoman took a swipe at the European Parliament (EP) for raising unreal issues on the status of human rights in Iran, and slammed the European body’s recent motion against the country as “unacceptable”.

On March 31, the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee voted on a motion for a resolution on the European Union (EU) strategy towards Iran. The EP will debate the resolution in its plenary meeting on Thursday, and it will be put to the vote later.

In its motion, the EP has claimed that the presidential elections in Iran in July 2013 “were not held according to the democratic standards valued by the EU.”

The biased motion has also accused Iran of violating human right, alleging that “the human rights situation in Iran is still characterized by the continued, systematic violation of fundamental rights.”

In reply, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham on Wednesday lashed out at the EP for making such unfounded claims, stressing that Iran is committed to respecting its whole citizens’ human rights on the basis of the country’s cultural values and religious tenets.

“At a time when Iran and the European Union have taken initial steps to resolve issues facing the two sides, European parliament’s stance on human rights and its claims about unreal issues, especially elections in Iran, is rejected and unacceptable,” she underlined.
