Official Says Doubts on Fate of Kidnapped Guard Do Not Mean He Is Alive
TEHRAN (Tasnim) — Iran’s Deputy Interior Minister for Security and Law Enforcement Affairs Ali Abdollahi said there is no evidence confirming the death of an Iranian border guard abducted by a terrorist group, but at the same time added that uncertainty about his fate does not mean he is alive.
Jamshid Danaeifar, along with four other Iranian border guards, was kidnapped on February 6 by a Pakistani-based terrorist group named the Jaish-ul-Adl.
They were abducted in Jakigour region in Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan and taken to Pakistan.
Four of the five border guards were released and returned home on Sunday after being held hostage for two months. The fate of the fifth still remains unclear.
“However, the abducted border guards were in Pakistani soil and the country’s government is responsible for the issue,” Abdollahi said during a press conference in Tehran on Sunday.
On March 23, Jaish-ul-Adl announced in a Twitter message that it had killed Danaeifar but the terrorist group has provided no evidence to confirm its claim. The four released border guards said that Danaeifar had been separated from them for nearly a month.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced in a Sunday statement that it will keep up efforts to shed light on the fate of Danaeifar.
