Austrian President Set to Visit Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Austria’s President Heinz Fischer is expected to pay a visit to Iran in the near future, an Iranian lawmaker said on Sunday.

“Austria’s president will pay an official visit to Iran soon to expand mutual cooperation between the two countries,” Hassan Kamran told the Tasnim News Agency on Sunday.

He said that the issue was discussed during Austrian foreign minister's visit to Tehran.

Also earlier this month, Fischer's spokesman said that the invitation from the Iranian side for Austrian President’s visit had been accepted in principle but no date has been set.

Fischer will be the first head of a western state to visit Iran for many years.

In September last year, the Iranian president met his Austrian counterpart on the sidelines of the 68th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where they exchanged views on bilateral relations, with President Rouhani emphasizing the need for removal of anti-Iran sanctions imposed by the European Union.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the unilaterally imposed sanctions by the EU against the Iranian nation ineffective and harming in the process of resolving the existing problems,” Rouhani said at the time in a meeting with Heinz Fischer.
