Envoy Commends Iran’s Cooperation in Iraqi Expats’ Voting in Tehran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iraq’s ambassador to Iran praised Tehran’s cooperation in holding the parliamentary elections in the country for the Iraqi nationals residing in Iran.

Muhammad Majid al-Sheikh told the Tasnim News Agency, after casting his vote here in Tehran, that the Islamic Republic has had excellent cooperation with Iraq in holding the parliamentary polls for Iraqi voters living in Iran.

There have been no problems (in the voting process) thanks to Iran’s cooperation in all areas such as opening the polling stations, he stated.

Voting for Iraqis living abroad in the parliamentary elections kicked off on Sunday, according to the electoral commission supervising parliamentary polls.

During the two-day process, eligible voters will only need to provide proof of citizenship to cast ballots in 20 Iraqi embassies and consulates in the Middle East, Europe and North America.

Al-Sheikh said there are around 34000 Iraqi citizens in Iran, 12000 to 14000 of whom are expected to cast ballots in the elections.

He added that Iraqis, especially Iraqi expatriates, are very keen to participate in the polls.

Local voting in Iraq’s parliamentary polls is scheduled for Wednesday.
