Portugal Supports Iran-Sextet N. Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Portuguese diplomat said his country backs the ongoing nuclear negotiations between Iran and six world powers and wants to see the talks bear fruit.

“Portugal supports the continuation and fruitfulness of the negotiations between Iran and the Group 5+1,” Portuguese Foreign Ministry's Director General for Foreign Policy Rui Macieira said in a meeting with the director general of West Europe affairs at Iran's Foreign Ministry, here in Tehran on Wednesday.

Iran and the sextet of world powers (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) are negotiating on Tehran’s peaceful program with the aim of putting an end to the decade-long standoff over Iran’s nuclear activities.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the visiting Portuguese diplomat pointed to the age-old relations between Tehran and Lisbon, and stressed that his country sees no problem with the expansion of ties with Iran in the political, economic and cultural fields.

The Iranian official, for his part, hailed as beneficial the political talks between the two countries, and voiced Tehran’s determination to enhance the economic and cultural relations with Lisbon.

In separate meetings on Wednesday, Macieira also met with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian and with Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American Affairs Majid Takht Ravanchi, who is also a member of Iran's nuclear negotiating team.
