Iran’s President Highlights Significance of CICA Summit

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the country’s presence in the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) is of great importance since such regional conferences continue to extend their influence in the world.

President Rouhani left Tehran for the Chinese city of Shanghai on Tuesday morning to attend the fourth summit of the CICA, slated for May 20 and 21.

Speaking to reporters before departing Tehran, Rouhani attached significance to the CICA summit, saying such regional conferences are increasingly attracting attention from both the United Nations and the international community.

The president then highlighted the great impact such meetings, like the CICA, can have on the “global and regional peace and stability”, noting that it is also important with an eye to Iran-China bilateral relations.

He underlined that the world’s trade and economic interactions heve been orienting towards the East Asia region, particularly towards India, Japan and China, whose latter is of great significance.

Iran has developed all-out ties with the east Asian nation of China, President Rouhani noted, saying the “very good” relations are established in many sectors as in energy, industry, science and technology.

Rouhani is among 11 heads of state and 10 chiefs of international organizations who will attend the two-day summit, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon. China is CICA's host from 2014 to 2016.

Established in 1992, CICA is a forum for dialogue and confidence building and now has 24 member countries and 13 observers.
