Spanish MP Highlights Iran’s Role in Regional Security
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Spanish lawmaker voiced Europe’s concern about a surge in extremist acts across the Middle East, and underlined that Iran plays a significant role in ensuring stability in the region.
“The threats posed by terrorism and extremism in the Middle East, particularly in Iraq and Syria, have concerned the European Union,” Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Spanish Parliament Josep Antoni Duran i Lleida said in Tehran on Tuesday.
He made the comments in a meeting with Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian.
“The (Middle East) region is undergoing very sensetive conditions, and we should join hands to help provide stability and security,” the visiting Spanish legislator added.
The Iranian diplomat, for his part, explained that Tehran always considers the “respect for people’s vote” as the main democratic principle regarding the regional developments.
Making a reference to the recent crisis in Iraq, Amir Abdollahian warned against the terrorist practices that aim to change the democratic political systems in the countries.
Since June 10, Iraq has witnessed a wave of violence fueled by the foreign-backed Takfiri terrorists. Violence in Iraq escalated last month after militants from the ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) terrorist group took control of swathes of the Arab country.
Meanwhile, Iraqi security forces backed by thousands of volunteers have pushed ahead with their campaign against the militants and managed to retake control of several areas captured by the ISIL.
