Japanese Envoy Urges More Academic Cooperation with Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Japan’s ambassador to Iran urged for more scientific interactions between Iranian and Japanese universities.

Ambassador Koji Haneda made the remark in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashad during the inauguration of a library in the suburbs of  Mashhad.

The Dr. Horri Library has been partly funded by the Japanese government's humanitarian aid.

“Dr. Horri Library is the symbol of good relations between Iranian and Japanese governments,” said Ambassador Haneda.

More than 30 ambassadors and diplomats attended the opening ceremony of Dr. Abbas Horri library, whose members are mostly foreign refugees and immigrants.

Astan Qods Razavi (an autonomous charitable foundation in Mashhad which manages the Imam Reza shrine and various institutions which belong to the organization) is hosting Haneda and other foreign ambassadors while they are in the city to review the situation of foreign refugees.

During the meeting, the General Manager of Libraries in Khorasan-e Razavi Province, Amirollah Shamaqdari, praised the UN High Commissionaire for Refugees (UNHCR) for arranging the meeting.

Shamaqdari also thanked Japanese government for contributing to the establishment of the library and underlined that such diplomatic activities could have good outcomes for the city which has hosted many Afghan immigrants and refugees.

Iran is one of the global record-holders in hosting millions of refugees from neighboring countries for more than three decades, only 860,000 of whom are registered.

Tens of thousands of Afghani refugees live in the eastern city of Mashhad due to its proximity with Iran-Afghanistan border.
