Iran Can Link Mexico to Central Asia: FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran and its southern port city of Chabahar provides a suitable route for Mexico to have access to the Central Asian nations for trade purposes, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said.

“Mexico and other countries can have (trade) ties with the Central Asian countries via Iran, and the port of Chabahar very well provides a gateway to Afghanistan and Central Asia,” Zarif said in a meeting with Mexico’s Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Carlos de Icaza in Tehran on Saturday.

Zarif also noted that Tehran and Mexico City enjoy abundant capacities to strengthen ties in different fields.

For his part, the Mexican diplomat called Iran as a “major player in the region”, and voiced the Latin American country’s willingness to continue dialogue with Iran.

The promotion of all-out cooperation with Latin American countries has been among the top priorities of the Islamic Republic's foreign policy over the past few years.

Tehran has close political and trade relations with Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia.
