Iranian Speaker Meets Counterparts at IPU Gathering


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – While the 131st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly has kicked off in the Swiss city of Geneva, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani took the opportunity to meet foreign counterparts on the sidelines of the event.

On Monday, Larijani held separate meetings with his Lebanese opposite number Nabih Berri and with Bangladeshi Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin in the Swiss city.

Later today, the Iranian speaker is scheduled to hold gatherings with the parliament speakers of Serbia and Iraq as well.

Over 700 lawmakers from 141 countries, including 104 speakers and deputy speakers of parliament, attend the 131st IPU Assembly from October 12 to 16.

The Geneva-based Inter-Parliamentary Union, which is an important non-governmental parliamentary institution, was founded in 1889.
