Spokeswoman Flatly Rejects Anti-Iran UN Human Rights Resolution

VIENNA (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman categorically rejected a UN resolution on the alleged human rights violations in the country, and denounced the “instrumental and political use” of human rights by the West.

“It is regrettable that the United Nations’ human rights mechanisms and tools have been and continue to be abused by the Western countries; therefore, the Islamic Republic of Iran categorically rejects the introduction, adoption and content of such resolutions,” Marziyeh Afkham said on Wednesday.

Her strong reaction came after the UN General Assembly’s main committee handling human rights on Tuesday adopted Canada’s version of a resolution criticizing Iran’s “alarming high frequency and increase in the death penalty.”

Canada’s proposed revised text of this year’s non-binding resolution was adopted with 78 votes in favor and 35 “no” votes. There were also 69 abstentions.

Elsewhere in her comments, Afkham deplored the Canada-drafted resolution for “disregarding the realities on the ground and being adopted on the basis of political motivations.”

Slamming as “biased” the resolution proposed by Canada, the spokeswoman added, “The resolution has been drafted by referring to non-authentic sources and on the basis of websites affiliated with the infamous terrorist groups, in a biased manner.”

She also noted that a raft of “unfounded, trumped-up and unsubstantiated claims” in the resolution have made it lacking in credibility.
