Iranian MPs Thank President for Contract on New Nuclear Power Plants
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian lawmakers expressed gratitude to President Hassan Rouhani for pursuing a contract with Russia to build new nuclear power plants in Iran.
“We, the deputies of the Iranian nation at the parliament, appreciate efforts (made by the government) to pursue and sign a contract on the construction of two new nuclear power plants in the country,” 201 members of the Iranian parliament stated in a letter to president Rouhani on Sunday.
The Iranian parliamentarians also described the move to sign the contract as “an honorable measure” which would be a major step toward scientific and industrial progress and development of the country in the application of peaceful nuclear energy.
Earlier on November 11, Tehran and Moscow signed an agreement, guaranteed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on the construction of eight nuclear power units in Iran.
Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi and Rosatom CEO Sergei Kirienko inked the documents in Moscow, promoting the links in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy between the two countries.
According to the agreement, Russia is to construct eight pressurized water reactors “turn-key ready” in Iran. Four of them will be built at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.
