Iranian Official Denies Reports on New Gas Reserve Discovery

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian energy official rejected media reports about the discovery of a new gas field in the country’s southern province of Fars.

Head of the National Iranian Oil Company’s (NIOC) Exploration Department Hormoz Qalavand said on Sunday that the discovery of the said reserve dates back to 2 years ago.

He made the comments in reaction to earlier media reports that Iran has recently discovered a massive gas reserve in the province of Fars.

On December 14, Mehr News Agency had quoted Qalavand as saying that Iranian technicians began to drill exploration oil wells to estimate the volume of the new gas reserve.

The report also cited him as noting that the reserve may extend up to Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.
