Afghan President Due in Iran to Sign Strategic Pact

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Spokesperson for the Afghan president unveiled plans of Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai’s visit to Iran in order to sign a strategic cooperation agreement.

Nazifullah Salarzai did not specify an exact date for the Afghan president’s trip, but noted that Afghanistan’s peace and stability are among the main issues to be discussed during Ahmadzai’s visit to Iran.

He said the strategic agreement between Tehran and Kabul will include cooperation on counter-terrorism, the peace process in Afghanistan, expansion of economic ties, fight on narcotics, and settlement of problems of Afghan refugees in Iran.

Referring to Afghanistan's national security adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar’s recent visit to Iran, Salarzai said Atmar has proposed ideas about Tehran-Kabul cooperation on Afghan peace talks.

Iranian officials have repeatedly called for a regional solution to the existing problems in Afghanistan and underlined the necessity for the termination of foreign forces' presence in the war-torn country.

Also, Iran has hosted many refugees from Afghanistan, though it has received little international support.
