Jordanian Envoy Terms Terrorism Major Threat to Shiites, Sunnis

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Jordan’s Ambassador to Tehran Abdullah Sulaiman Abdullah Abu Romman voiced deep concern over the spread of terrorism in the region, saying that the inauspicious phenomenon poses a major threat to Muslims, both Shiites and Sunnis.

“Terrorism is the most important challenge facing the region, which threatens Shiite and Sunni Muslims,” Abu Romman told the Tasnim News Agency on Sunday.

He emphasized that Takfiris (extremists) regard Shiites and Sunnis as disbelievers, adding that "no dialogue can be established with terrorists and they should only be fought."

The senior diplomat said that Jordan has always supported unity among Muslims and is seeking for their further proximity.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Abu Romman pointed to the issue of Palestine and said that the issue is Jordan’s top priority but unfortunately, some Arab states have paid less attention to the issue of Palestine due to developments caused by the Arab Spring.

He went on to say that most of Palestinian refugees have been sheltered in Jordan.

The envoy also described Palestinians’ right to return to their homeland as “sacred”, and said resolving the Middle East conflict is not possible without resolving the issue of Palestinian refugees.

During the Israeli onslaught on the Gaza Strip, which started in early July 2014 and ended in late August that year, about 1,500 buildings and structures were demolished, leaving thousands of people homeless.

Over 2,140 Palestinians, including 577 children, were killed during the Israeli attacks. Over 11,100 others, including 3,374 children, 2,088 women and 410 elderly people, were also injured.
