Rouhani Sees China’s Catalytic Role in Iran Nuclear Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani highlighted the significant role China can play to speed up the process of securing a final nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

“In the current conditions, the final agreement will be reached in a short time if the other side has the sufficient political will, and China’s effective presence shortens that time,” Rouhani said in a meeting with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Tehran on Sunday.

China is a member of the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) with which Iran is negotiating to hammer out a long-awaited agreement on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.

President Rouhani expressed the hope that China’s cooperation and the talks with the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) would immediately result in a comprehensive accord that respects the Iranian nation’s rights and prepares the ground for more international cooperation.

The Iranian president also noted that Tehran and Beijing have developed cooperation to such a level that should expand “strategic” cooperation in all areas.

For his part, the top Chinese diplomat said Beijing is determined to upgrade its relations with Iran to “strategic and long-term” cooperation.
