Zarif Hails Belarus’ Role in Resolving Regional Issues

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif lauded the “decisive” role Belarus can play in settling regional issues, the Ukraine crisis in particular.

“Belarus has a decisive role in resolving these (regional) issues,” Zarif said, speaking to reporters upon arrival at Minsk airport.

He went on to say that the crisis in Ukraine will top the agenda of his talks with senior Belarusian officials.

As regards Tehran’s stance on the Ukraine crisis, Zarif asserted that Iran has always supported a peaceful solution to the issue.

After nearly 16 hours of negotiations in the Belarusian capital of Minsk, the leaders of Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine on Thursday agreed a deal to end fighting in eastern Ukraine.

The Iranian FM referred to the agreement, and expressed the hope that it can lead to the cessation of hostilities, as they can have “very adverse consequences” for the global peace and security.

Earlier on Sunday night, Zarif also paid a visit to Azerbaijani capital of Baku, and held meetings with his counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov and President Ilham Aliyev.
