Senior Iranian Cleric Raps Saudi Aggression against Yemen

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi, a senior Iranian cleric, on Monday strongly condemned the recent war waged by Saudi Arabia’s regime on Yemen, deploring the international community for its silence over the aggression.

Saudi Arabia and its Persian Gulf Arab allies carried out military operations in Yemen, killing dozens of civilians in Sana'a, the capital, and other cities.

Denouncing the disastrous attacks on Yemen, Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi described the Saudi-led aggression as a plot by hegemonic powers aimed at pitting Muslim people against each other.

They aim to destroy Islamic countries by the hands of Muslim people themselves, he stated in the statement.

The Iranian cleric also slammed the international community for failing to take appropriate positions in such destructive attacks, saying that they have fanned the flame of the war by their silence or “loose” stances.

Earlier on Thursday, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham had also denounced the invasion and described it as a "dangerous step that runs counter to international obligations to respect countries' national sovereignty".
