Asian-African Conference Gets Underway in Indonesia
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Asian-African Conference (AAC) convened in Jakarta on Wednesday, 60 years after its foundation, with Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani having joined some 30 other leaders there in the gathering.
President Rouhani delivered an address to the conference on Wednesday morning. He will also chair the second of the six sessions to be held during the conference.
Earlier, Indonesian President Joko Widodo gave an opening speech at the ceremony that commemorates Bandung Conference in 1955 which laid the bedrock for the Non-Alignment Movement.
A series of summits under the theme “Strengthening South-South Cooperation to Promote World Peace and Prosperity” have been held in Jakarta and Bandung since April 19 and will go on until April 24.
Delegates from 109 Asian and African countries, 16 observer countries, and 25 international organizations take part in the event.
The forum is aimed at strengthening partnerships among the Asian and African nations and sharing experiences in enhancing both regions’ economic development.
Moreover, the Asian African Business Summit is held in Jakarta as a side event. The Commemoration of the 60th AAC anniversary will be held in Bandung on April 24.
