Persepolis Edges Esteghlal in Tehran Derby
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Persepolis football team defeated Esteghlal 1-0 in the Iran Professional League (IPL) season’s final day on Friday.
Two teams were equal in the first half which was held in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium in front of more than 60,000 fans.
In the second half, Persepolis dominated possession of the ball and created more chances.
Ali Alipour scored the only goal of the match in the 65th minute.
Persepolis young striker found the back of the net with a header from a brilliant Hadi Norouzi cross.
Soon after Esteghlal put Persepolis under pressure to equalize the match but failed to score in the remaining minutes.
“I think we should have been awarded us a penalty. It would have changed the game,” Esteghlal coach Javad Zarincheh said in the post-match news conference.
Esteghlal and Persepolis have played against each other 80 times, with Esteghlal winning 24 games, Persepolis taking 19 victories, and 37 matches ending in a draw.
