Iranian Minister, ICANN CEO Confer on Internet Governance


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi on Tuesday discussed the future of the Internet and the role of governments in internet governance with the CEO of ICANN in Geneva, Switzerland.

On the sidelines of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2015 in Geneva, Vaezi held a meeting with Fadi Chehade, the CEO and president of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

At the meeting, the Iranian minister highlighted the necessity for paying serious attention to the role of governments in regulating and governing the Internet.

He further elaborated on the plans and programs the Iranian government has implemented or is pursuing in the field of Internet.

The two sides also exchanged views on a variety of issues including security in global networks, user privacy, child protection on the Internet, ICANN’s technical cooperation with Iran, and advanced trainings for Iranian managers.

ICANN is a nonprofit organization that is responsible for the coordination of maintenance and methodology of several databases of unique identifiers related to the namespaces of the Internet, and ensuring the network's stable and secure operation.

Vaezi is in Switzerland to attend the WSIS Forum 2015, during which he is slated to deliver a speech on Tuesday in the third section of Policy Statements.

The WSIS Forum 2015 is underway in ITU and WIPO Headquarters, Geneva, and will go on until May 29. The overall theme of the WSIS Forum 2015 is Innovating Together: Enabling ICTs for Sustainable Development.

Policy Statements will be delivered during the High-Level Track (May 26–27) Forum by high-ranking officials of the wider WSIS Stakeholder community, representing the Government, Private Sector, Civil Society, Academia and International Organizations to express their views and report on the achievements, challenges and recommendations on the implementation of WSIS Action Lines, emerging trends, innovation and matters of strategic importance to the development of the telecommunication and information and communication technology sector.
