Speaker Urges Implementation of Iran-Japan Extradition Treaty

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in a meeting with his Japanese counterpart called for measures to pave the way for implementation of a treaty signed between Tehran and Tokyo on extradition of criminals.

The two speakers met in New York, on the sidelines of the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.

The meeting came after Iran’s parliament in August ratified Iran-Japan extradition treaty. The two countries had finalized details of the treaty in January 2015 after five years of technical talks and exchange of diplomatic delegations.

Once implemented, the document will allow Iranian prisoners in Japan and Japanese inmates in Iran to return to their respective countries and complete their prison terms at home.

Elsewhere in the meeting with Speaker of Japan’s House of Representatives Tadamori Oshima, Larijani highlighted the investment opportunities in Iran following termination of sanctions under a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

He noted that Japanese companies can invest in Iran’s industrial projects, oil and petrochemical industry and medical sectors in the post-sanction era.

For his part, Oshima praised the conclusion of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the six world powers, expressing the hope for an immediate implementation of the accord.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (alternatively known as the P5+1 or E3+3) on July 14 reached a conclusion on a lasting nuclear agreement that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.

The promising prospect of trade with Iran has prompted many countries to explore the market potential in the populous Middle East nation.
