Syrian Crisis Can Be Resolved Only Democratically: Iran’s Larijani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani described military measures in Syria as futile and said the crisis in the Arab country can be resolved only through a democratic process.

“The Syrian issue has reached a point where a political solution should change the situation,” Larijani said in a meeting with his Omani counterpart, Sheikh Khalid bin Hilal bin Nasir Al Ma’awali, in New York.

He further hailed the role that Oman is playing to resolve the Syrian crisis as “positive”, saying that the issue can be settled only by the Syrian people’s will and in a democratic manner.

“All political groups except terrorists and extremist groups can have a role in the future of Syria,” the Iranian parliamentarian added.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from various groups, including the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

The US and its regional allies have been supporting the militants operating inside Syria for more than four years.

Larijani is in New York attending the fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, where he delivered a speech on Monday.

The Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament is being held at United Nations Headquarters in New York and will finish work on Wednesday.
