Iran, Brazil Plan to Revitalize Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Senior diplomats from Iran and Brazil voiced determination to enhance the relations between the two countries in diverse fields.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Luiz Iecker Vieira met in Tehran on Sunday morning.

In a joint press conference after the meeting, Zarif said they have considered plans to promote bilateral cooperation with more efforts.

Pointing to the long-term cooperation between Iran and Brazil in the past, particularly in agriculture, Zarif said plans are underway to restore the interactions that declined under “cruel sanctions” imposed on Tehran in recent years.

He also noted that Iranian Minister of Economy Ali Tayyebnia, who presides over Iran-Brazil joint commission, is going to visit the South American country soon.

According to Zarif, Brazil’s minister of development, industry, and trade is scheduled to travel to Iran with a delegation of Brazilian businessmen.

He noted that the South American country’s minister of labor and employment is also to pay a visit to Iran in the coming months.

Vieira, for his part, said he has travelled to Tehran with the purpose of strengthening ties with Iran.

He said the two countries enjoyed excellent ties in the past and that Tehran and Brasilia are determined to resume and enhance the ties.

Vieira invited Foreign Minister Zarif to visit Brazil, highlighting the significance of diplomatic and political interactions in the promotion of bilateral ties.

Iran-Brazil relations date back to 1903. In 1957, they signed a cultural agreement, which came into force in 1962. The agreement marked the elevation of the Brazilian legation in Tehran to the condition of embassy.

Vieira’s landmark visit to Iran follows the conclusion of nuclear negotiations between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Iran and the six nations (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) on July 14 finalized the text of a lasting nuclear deal that would terminate all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Tehran after taking effect.

The promising prospect of relations with Iran has prompted many countries to send ranking delegations to Tehran after the July agreement.
