Iran’s Deputy FM, UN Envoy Discuss Latest Developments in Yemen

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian and UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed on Saturday conferred on the latest developments in Yemen and the ongoing efforts to resolve crisis in the country.

During the phone conversation, the UN envoy pointed to the latest efforts for the political dialogue among Yemeni groups in Omani capital of Muscat, and asked for the continuation of negotiations.

“Yemeni crisis has no military solution and can be resolved through political means only,” he noted.

He said all influential parties inside or outside Yemen should support the existing atmosphere for direct dialogue in a bid to establish truce in the country.

The Iranian diplomat, for his part, pointed to the growing number of Saudi-led airstrikes against Yemen, and said, “Insistence on the use of military approach is a miscalculation and will impair the atmosphere for the UN-sponsored dialogue among Yemenis”.

Amir Abdollahian further said UN inability to prevent human catastrophe in Yemen would undermine international humanitarian laws, and asked the international body to use its entire capacity to end bloodshed in Yemen on the verge of Eid al-Adha.

Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) is one of the biggest religious festivals of Muslims.
