Syria Solution Should Be Based on Realities, Syrians’ Will: Iran
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham underlined that the settlement of the crisis in Syria is possible only through a solution that respects the will of the Syrian people.
“In our view, the only practicable solution in Syria is one that is based on the realities and respect for the demands and will of the people of Syria,” she said Wednesday in reaction to comments made recently by US Secretary of State John Kerry about Iran’s role in Syria
Kerry on Tuesday said the US hopes Russia and Iran would play a positive role in Syria and support a political transition aimed at ending the turmoil in the country.
“Iran has announced since the beginning of the Syria crisis that the only path to ending the war and crisis in Syria is helping to the establish Syria-Syria dialogues and political agreement,” Afkham pointed out.
Referring to the strategies of the US and its allies regarding Syria as an obstacle to the resolution of the crisis, she said that incorrect and bigoted policies, which have only led to the continuation of the crisis and killing of innocent people, should be abandoned.
She added that these policies are even affecting the attempts by the UN and other organizations to settle the crisis.
Afkham went on to say that any plan that does not prioritize a serious fight against Takfiri terrorists and other extremist groups in Syria is condemned to failure.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.
In the past four years, more than 220,000 people have died in Syria -overwhelmingly civilians– and around 4 million Syrian people are now refugees in other countries. Another 7.6 million are displaced inside Syria.
