Syrian Deputy FM in Iran for Talks
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad arrived in Tehran on Tuesday for talks with Iranian officials.
The visiting Syrian official held a meeting with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian at the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
Iran, a staunch ally of Syria, has been giving its support to Syria’s legitimate government in countering the foreign-backed militants.
The Arab country has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with ISIL Takfiri terrorists currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.
According to the United Nations, more than 240,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.
Last week, the Austrian capital of Vienna played host to foreign ministers from some 20 countries, including Iran, the US and Russia, for a multilateral meeting for talks on the four-and-a-half-year war in Syria.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has emphasized that Syrians alone have the right to shape their own future, saying this attitude was explicitly announced by Iran in the Vienna gathering.
