Iran, UN Reiterate Support for National Dialogue in Yemen
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy foreign minister and the UN special envoy for Yemen emphasized the necessity for inclusive dialogue among the Yemeni groups as one effective approach to settlement of conflicts in the Arab country.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian and the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed met on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing crisis in Yemen, aggravated by Saudi-led military attacks that have continued for more than seven months.
Calling for an immediate end to the foreign military strikes on the people of Yemen and its infrastructures, the Iranian diplomat stressed the need for the resumption of talks among Yemeni groups.
Amir Abdollahian also voiced Tehran’s readiness to contribute to the process of talks in Yemen.
The UN envoy, for his part, praised Iran’s help in settling the crisis in Yemen via political approaches.
Cheikh Ahmed underlined that Yemen’s disputes can be resolved politically, but added that a compromise among the warring sides requires cooperation and support for Yemeni-Yemeni talks.
Since March 26, Saudis and their Arab allies have been launching military attacks against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi.
More than 4,000 people, many of them children and women, have been killed in the Saudi-led aggression against the Arab country so far.
