French MP Brands Paris’s Policy on Syria as Wrong

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A French lawmaker stressed that France has pursued a “mistaken policy” towards Syria, urging French politicians to reconsider the country's foreign stance on Damascus.

"It's very simple, we are at war. We are fighting against different kinds of jihadists and the Islamic State (ISIL Takfiri terrorists)," Jacques Myard, an MP from the opposition Union pour un Mouvement Populaire (UMP) party said in an interview with Sputnik on Saturday following the Friday terrorist attacks.

"We must go further, France needs to reexamine its foreign policy, particularly in Syria. I think we have followed a mistaken policy. Today, those who are fighting the jihadists are those in Damascus, with the support of Iran and Russia,” he added.

"The enemy today is the Islamic State (ISIL), the jihadists of al-Qaeda, it is not Bashar Assad who is the enemy of France,” Myard underlined, adding, "In order to put an end to terrorism, it is necessary to urgently find a solution to the crisis in Syria."

Late on Friday, a string of coordinated attacks in and around the French capital left at least 129 people dead and some 200 others injured.

A state of emergency has been declared in the European country shaken by the horrific attacks.
