High-Speed Railway to Connect China to Iran: Report

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – China's railway authorities have proposed a high-speed railway connecting the country's northwest region to Iran, a report said.

The proposal was put forward by He Huawu, chief engineer of China Railway Corp, at “One Belt, One Road Initiative” forum hosted by China Civil Engineering Society, Jakarta Post reported on Saturday.

The proposed route will connect China's to West Asia stretching from Urumqi and Yining to Almaty in Kazakhstan, Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan, Tashkent and Samarkand in Uzbekistan, Ashgabat in Turkmenistan and finally Tehran in Iran.

The northeast-southwest line would be complementary to the existing railway network in central Asian nations, which mostly run southeast to northwest toward Moscow, He said.

Iran is currently linked to Central Asia through a rail corridor which connects it to Kazakhstan and Russia through Turkmenistan, and another to Europe via Turkey.
