Arrangements Made to Facilitate Arbaeen Pilgrimage: Iran’s Police Chief

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Police Chief said that following consultations with Iraqi officials, preparatory measures have been ramped up for the entry of pilgrims into the Arab country for the mourning rituals marking this year’s Arbaeen.

After talks with Iraqi authorities, officials at the Arab country’s ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs have taken measures to facilitate the entry and exit of foreign visitors during Arbaeen, Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari told reporters in the southwestern city of Khorramshahr on Monday.

He also lauded the measures that have been taken at the Shalamcheh border-crossing, saying pilgrims can easily travel to Iraq after obtaining a visa.

Officials predict that around two million Iranian pilgrims will go to Iraq for Arbaeen rituals this year.

The Arbaeen mourning ceremony is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

It marks the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, pilgrims, mainly from Iraq and Iran, travel long routes on foot to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located.

Last year, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world gathered in Karbala to attend the mourning ceremonies marking Arbaeen.
