Iran’s President, Pakistan’s PM Discuss Regional Issues
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday discussed the latest regional developments, including the recent diplomatic row between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
At the Tuesday meeting, Rouhani pointed to the remarks made by Sharif on Tehran-Riyadh tension, and noted, “We call for the expansion of relations and do not welcome tension provided that the rights of Muslim people are respected.”
President Rouhani also urged Muslim countries to form an alliance for progress and development and not for war.
The remarks were apparently a reference to the coalition formed by Saudi Arabia for the aggression against Yemen.
More than 7,500 Yemenis have so far been killed in more than nine months of Saudi-led coalition attacks.
Rouhani further expressed deep concern over insecurity caused by terrorists in the region and said that Iran's policy is based on constructive interaction with world countries, particularly the neighboring states.
Also at the meeting, the Pakistani prime minister underlined the importance of improving solidarity and unity among Muslims.
Sharif expressed concern over the spread of Islamophobia across the world and said terrorists and extremists are taking advantage of lack of unity among Muslim countries.
