Boosting Ties with Latin America, Iran’s Principled Policy: President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani underlined that promoting relations with Latin American countries, including Uruguay, is among the Islamic Republic’s principled policies.

Speaking at a meeting with Uruguay’s Vice-President Raul Fernando Sendic Rodriguez in Tehran on Tuesday, President Rouhani described Tehran-Montevideo ties as “very close and friendly”, saying that no third country can exert an influence on the relations.

He further predicted a bright future for Iran-Uruguay trade ties, stressing that with the establishment of the two countries’ Joint Economic Commission and the implementation of previous agreements, a new chapter will be opened in the history of bilateral relations.

Rouhani also touched upon the two countries’ economic capacities, saying, “In order to accelerate mutual cooperation, these common capacities should become more operational than the past, particularly between the private sectors of the two countries.”

Sendic, for his part, emphasized that his country is determined to increase the level of cooperation between the two sides in areas of mutual interest.

The remarks come against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of the comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear program.

The JCPOA came into force on January 16 and terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.

Expansion of relations with Latin American nations in all political, economic and cultural fields has been top on the agenda of Iran's foreign policy.
